I am a Professor of British Literature and Culture. \u00a0My wife Caroline Crampton<\/a> and I live on the Wirral, along with Morris<\/a> our Clumber spaniel. \u00a0Our shared interests are wide-ranging, including dogs, Orkney, the Arts and Crafts Movement, Edwardian and interwar literature, trains, the countryside, the sea, ruins, Tunnock’s, clutter, and many other things, but Caroline is best known for her love of Golden Age detective fiction (she is the host of Shedunnit<\/a>). \u00a0And Caroline’s wonderful new book is A Body Made of Glass<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0You can see more about her book here<\/a>. \u00a0Morris is not interested in books but he does like Orkney, trains, the countryside, the sea, ruins and dogs (apart from Huskies, for some reason).<\/p>\r\n

I studied at St Andrews University (first-class MA, with the Class Medal, the Rutherford Prize and the Wyatt-Fenty Prize) and then at The Queen’s College, Oxford University (M.Phil and D.Phil, both funded by the AHRC). \u00a0I have held lectureships at Oxford (St Edmund Hall and Merton), Swansea, Brighton and London (Queen Mary) as well as a teaching fellowship at St Andrews. \u00a0I was a Moore Institute Visiting Research Fellow at NUI Galway during 2015-16, and an Ernest Walder Memorial Scholar at Gladstone’s Library during 2017. \u00a0I gave\u00a0the British Academy’s Chatterton Lecture on Poetry<\/a> in November 2018.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I am a General Editor, with Lucy Newlyn, of the six-volume Oxford University Press edition of Edward Thomas’s prose, and I have edited the first two volumes: Autobiographies<\/i> was published in March 2011, and then England and Wales<\/i> (co-edited with Lucy Newlyn) was published in November that year. \u00a0I am now editing the sixth volume, Pilgrimages<\/i>.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I have written a number of articles and chapters on Edward Thomas, most recently a chapter on Edward Thomas for A Cambridge History of World War One Poetry. \u00a0<\/i>I have also co-edited, with Lucy Newlyn, a successful anthology called Branch-Lines: Edward Thomas and Contemporary Poetry<\/i> (Enitharmon, 2007).<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

I have made a number of appearances on national and regional television and radio, and in the past few years I have given talks about the First World War at a wide range of places (literary festivals, bookshops, museums, schools, libraries, churches, universities, arts centres, a cinema, a pub).<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
