{"id":14,"date":"2017-11-25T23:07:41","date_gmt":"2017-11-25T23:07:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/?page_id=14"},"modified":"2026-01-09T23:26:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T23:26:36","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/index.php\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"Guy Cuthbertson"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>I am a Professor of British Literature and Culture. \u00a0My wife <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinecrampton.com\">Caroline Crampton<\/a> and I live on the Wirral, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/index.php\/about\/morris\/\">Morris<\/a> our Clumber spaniel. \u00a0Our shared interests are wide-ranging, including dogs, Orkney, the Arts and Crafts Movement, Edwardian and interwar literature, trains, the countryside, the sea, ruins, Tunnock&#8217;s, clutter, and many other things, but Caroline is best known for her love of Golden Age detective fiction (she is the host of <a href=\"https:\/\/shedunnitshow.com\">Shedunnit<\/a>). \u00a0And Caroline&#8217;s wonderful new book is <a href=\"https:\/\/carolinecrampton.com\/abodymadeofglass\/\"><em>A Body Made of Glass<\/em><\/a>. \u00a0You can see more about her book <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carolinecrampton.com\/abodymadeofglass\/\">here<\/a>. \u00a0Morris is not interested in books but he does like Orkney, trains, the countryside, the sea, ruins and dogs (apart from Huskies, for some reason).<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"wp-image-18 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/V4Ckrjo6-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/V4Ckrjo6-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/V4Ckrjo6-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/V4Ckrjo6.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>I studied at St Andrews University (first-class MA, with the Class Medal, the Rutherford Prize and the Wyatt-Fenty Prize) and then at The Queen&#8217;s College, Oxford University (M.Phil and D.Phil, both funded by the AHRC). \u00a0I have held lectureships at Oxford (St Edmund Hall and Merton), Swansea, Brighton and London (Queen Mary) as well as a teaching fellowship at St Andrews. \u00a0I was a Moore Institute Visiting Research Fellow at NUI Galway during 2015-16, and an Ernest Walder Memorial Scholar at Gladstone&#8217;s Library during 2017. \u00a0I gave\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk\/events\/lectures\/listings\/chatterton-lectures-poetry\/\">the British Academy&#8217;s Chatterton Lecture on Poetry<\/a> in November 2018.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>&#8212;<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?K=9780300233384\"><i>Peace at La<\/i><em>st<\/em><\/a><em>: A Portrait of Armistice Day, 11 November 1918<\/em>, was published by Yale University Press in October 2018 (\u00a318.99 in hardback). \u00a0My biography of <a href=\"http:\/\/yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?K=9780300153002\">Wilfred Owen was published by Yale University Press in 2014<\/a> and then <a href=\"http:\/\/yalebooks.com\/book\/9780300216158\/wilfred-owen\">in paperback in October 2015<\/a>.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>&#8212;<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>I am a General Editor, with Lucy Newlyn, of the six-volume Oxford University Press edition of Edward Thomas&#8217;s prose, and I have edited the first two volumes: <i>Autobiographies<\/i> was published in March 2011, and then <i>England and Wales<\/i> (co-edited with Lucy Newlyn) was published in November that year. \u00a0I am now editing the sixth volume, <i>Pilgrimages<\/i>.<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>&#8212;<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>I have written a number of articles and chapters on Edward Thomas, most recently a chapter on Edward Thomas for <i>A Cambridge History of World War One Poetry. \u00a0<\/i>I have also co-edited, with Lucy Newlyn, a successful anthology called <i>Branch-Lines: Edward Thomas and Contemporary Poetry<\/i> (Enitharmon, 2007).<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>&#8212;<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<div>External Examining: Edge Hill University; the title of the talk was &#8216;&#8221;Run hard hounds&#8221;: Edward Thomas and dogs&#8217;.<\/li>\r\n<li>I spoke at the Edward Thomas Literary Festival in October 2021: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petersfieldmuseum.co.uk\/whats-on\/pike-popler-oram-and-fatt-exploring-churchyards-graves-and-epitaphs-edward-thomas\">&#8216;Pike, Popler, Oram, and Fatt&#8217;: Exploring Churchyards, Graves and Epitaphs with Edward Thomas.<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li>I interviewed my wife Caroline Crampton for the podcast <a href=\"https:\/\/shedunnitshow.com\/athomewithshedunnit\/\"><em>Shedunnit<\/em> (6 October 2021)<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li>On 3 March 2022, I gave <a href=\"http:\/\/guycuthbertson.com\/index.php\/the-simple-life\/\">my inaugural professorial lecture<\/a> at Liverpool Hope: \u2018A Return to Nature: The pursuit of &#8220;the simple life&#8221;, from Edward Thomas to the present day\u2019. \u00a0The recording is now available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X1EqSdrItB4\">YouTube<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li>I wrote a chapter on Edward Thomas and Walter de la Mare for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk\/books\/isbn\/9781800854659\"><em>Walter de la Mare: Critical Appraisals<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<li>On 8 October, I spoke about <em>The Icknield Way<\/em> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/petersfieldmuseum.digitickets.co.uk\/event-tickets\/42926?catID=34086\">Edward Thomas Literary Festival 2022<\/a>. \u00a0I was also part of a joint event with the Robert Frost Society.<\/li>\r\n<li><em>Peace at Last<\/em> was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/yalebooks.co.uk\/display.asp?k=9780300254877\">paperback<\/a> in December 2022.<\/li>\r\n<li>I appeared on the BBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m001df48\"><em>In Our Time,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0discussing Wilfred Owen, on 27 October 2022.
