From its origins in 1932 to celebrated recordings by Otis Redding and countless others, the song has become part of popular culture across generations. Yet beneath its familiar melody may lie an unexpected literary connection. Guy Cuthbertson, author of\u00a0Lady C<\/a><\/em>, investigates whether one of the twentieth century\u2019s most controversial novels, D.H. Lawrence\u2019s Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover, <\/em>helped inspire the song\u2019s most memorable lines. <\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Miss Marple first appeared at almost the exact same time as Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover, <\/em>which was published privately in Italy in early 1928 \u2013 Miss Marple first appeared in print in December 1927 so it is nice to think of Marple stories and Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover<\/em> arriving at the same time, a mail-order copy of Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover<\/em> lurking on the bedside table in 1928 as someone read a Marple story before bed, the two newly-minted women each a fresh and exciting discovery for the reader. We should bring those two great women, Connie and Jane, together – incidentally Jane is a name that Connie is also given in Lady Chatterley\u2019s Lover<\/em>, somewhat indecently.<\/strong><\/p>\n
